Here is a small, printable prayer for the mundane practice of folding the washing.
For Folding the Washing is a little, fold-yourself Pocket Liturgy: tiny eight-page zines written with the intention of incorporating prayer into everyday life alongside the routine stuff. Print it onto one piece of A4 paper, make one cut, fold it into a tiny book, and place it somewhere helpful.
You may want to store it near the laundry basket, slip it into your linen cupboard or place it wherever your pile of clean washing tends to stack up (for our family, it’s the couch). Let it become a little worn around the edges! If it get’s too worn, you can print another one any time.
This Pocket Liturgy is a prayer for a job that is never finished for long. It moves through the motions of shaking out, smoothing and folding clothes, and all that can be found there: frustration, repetition, care, and the lives of the our loved ones who wear them. It also remembers the hands that made our clothes and the value of their work.
The words and artwork are both created by me, an artist and Anglican priest in Aotearoa New Zealand. The illustrations begin as hand-carved lino or wood blocks, bringing the marks and imperfections of traditional printmaking into something you can print, fold and use at home.
This is prayer made to be held and used – small enough for a pocket!
